Norwegian energy giant Equinor has selected Geoview, a domestic marine survey company, to conduct seabed geophysical surveying and mapping for the Ulsan Firefly floating offshore wind zone, located off the coast of Ulsan.
Equinor is currently developing an 800 MW Firefly floating offshore wind farm approximately 70 km offshore from Ulsan.
Embret Johnsgaard, the Director of Offshore Wind Procurement at Equinor Korea, stated, “Collaborating with Geoview marks another milestone in Equinor’s efforts to build partnerships with local Korean companies in the floating offshore wind sector. Working with Korea’s excellent supply chain is a crucial aspect of our projects and part of our ongoing efforts to foster long-term collaboration with Korean businesses.”
With the start of marine geophysical surveying in partnership with Geoview, Equinor plans to continue collaborating with companies within the Korean supply chain throughout the development of the Firefly offshore wind project.
Over the next 6 to 24 months, more opportunities will be provided for Korean supply chain companies to participate as partners in the development of the Firefly floating offshore wind farm.
Equinor plans to reveal more detailed plans regarding the supply chain and partnerships for the Firefly floating offshore wind project at the Firefly project supply chain seminar scheduled for June.
Park Do-hyun, the General Manager of Equinor South Korea overseeing the Donghae 1 and Firefly projects, explained, “It is crucial to collaborate with leading domestic companies with expertise in marine surveys and related regulations for the Firefly floating offshore wind project. This partnership will ensure effective and precise surveying, helping transform Ulsan into a global clean energy hub.”
Geoview, chosen for its marine survey expertise, specializes in seabed mapping, geophysical investigations, and other marine studies. The company has its own dedicated marine survey vessel and technical expertise, along with extensive data and geophysical survey experience in the Ulsan area.
Geoview is set to launch its marine survey vessel, Geoview No.1, from Onsan Port in Ulsan in the first half of this year to carry out the necessary marine geophysical surveys for the Firefly floating offshore wind project.
