Norwegian energy company Equinor has selected GeoView, a South Korean marine exploration specialist, to conduct a seabed geophysical survey and mapping for the Ulsan Firefly Floating Offshore Wind Farm site, located off the coast of Ulsan.
Equinor is currently developing the 800 MW Firefly Floating Offshore Wind Farm approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of Ulsan.
Embret Johnsgaard, Procurement Manager for Equinor’s South Korea Offshore Wind Projects, stated, “The collaboration with GeoView marks another milestone in Equinor’s efforts to establish partnerships with local companies in the floating offshore wind sector. Collaborating with South Korea’s excellent supply chain is a key element of our projects and reflects Equinor’s commitment to building long-term partnerships with Korean companies.”
Starting with the marine geophysical survey in cooperation with GeoView, Equinor plans to continue collaborating with South Korean supply chain companies throughout the development of the Firefly Wind Farm project.
Over the next 6–24 months, the project aims to create more opportunities for South Korean companies to participate as partners in the offshore wind farm development process.
Equinor also plans to unveil detailed plans for the Firefly project’s supply chain and partnerships at the Firefly Project Supply Chain Seminar in June.
Dohyun Park, General Manager of Equinor South Korea, overseeing the Donghae 1 and Firefly projects, emphasized the importance of collaborating with competent local companies for marine surveys related to the project area. He stated, “Working with leading domestic companies like GeoView, which possess expertise in marine surveys and regulatory requirements, is critical to the success of the Firefly Floating Offshore Wind Farm project.”
He added, “During the geophysical and seabed surveys, Equinor will establish a strong collaborative framework with GeoView, local fishermen in Ulsan, and relevant stakeholders to ensure a safe and precise survey. This will contribute to transforming Ulsan into a global hub for clean energy.”
GeoView, the company selected for the marine survey, specializes in services such as seabed mapping and geophysical studies. It boasts dedicated marine survey vessels and advanced technology, along with extensive data and geophysical exploration experience specific to the waters off Ulsan.
GeoView plans to launch its marine survey vessel, GeoView No.1, from Ulsan Onsan Port in the first half of this year to conduct the geophysical survey required for the Firefly Floating Offshore Wind Farm project.
