GeoView, recognized as a leader in marine exploration technology in South Korea, unveiled its new marine survey vessel, the GeoView DP-1, at a launch ceremony held at Busan Port’s Pier 1 on April 25.
The event was attended by influential representatives from both domestic and international wind power companies, including Equinor, COP, Anma Offshore Wind, KF Wind, Northland Power, Ørsted, Bada Energy, Korea South-East Power, LS Cable & System, Korea National Oil Corporation, and KT Submarine, all expressing high expectations for the DP-1.
The DP-1, weighing 1,700 tons, is equipped with two 2,500 brake horsepower (Bhp) Niigata 6L28HX engines, capable of navigating at 12 knots. The vessel measures 56.41 meters in length, 16 meters in width, and 6 meters in depth, with a deck area of 360 square meters (108.9 pyeong). These specifications make the DP-1 the largest privately owned marine survey vessel in South Korea.
One of the standout features of the DP-1 is its Dynamic Positioning (DP) technology, which allows the vessel to maintain its position accurately during marine surveys, ensuring more precise data collection.
The DP-1’s first deployment will be for the “Haewool Floating Wind Farm” project, which is being developed offshore Ulsan by COP (Denmark).
Since its establishment in 2005, GeoView, a local company based in Busan, has been dedicated to technological development and has achieved several milestones, including the export of marine survey technology to the Philippines in 2019, the subsea power cable installation project between Wando and Jeju in 2021, and conducting marine survey projects for Equinor’s “Firefly Floating Wind Farm” in Norway in 2022.
GeoView became the first domestic company to export marine survey technology abroad and secure and complete a marine survey project commissioned by a foreign company.
GeoView’s CEO, Kim Hyun-Do, stated, “GeoView aims to be the best, not the first. Based on the best equipment and technology, we will do our utmost to be a successful partner for offshore wind developers.”
Frank Rinja, Head of Project Procurement at COP Apac, expressed his confidence in the DP-1’s role, stating, “We expect DP-1 to play a critical role in conducting accurate surveys and analyses. The data collected by DP-1 will contribute significantly to both our ongoing project and the overall offshore wind industry in Korea.”
