A Busan-based company has constructed South Korea’s largest private marine exploration vessel, which will begin its first mission next month.

GeoView Co., Ltd., headquartered in Saha District, Busan, held the launching ceremony for its marine exploration vessel, GeoView DP-1, on April 25 at a pier near the Busan Port Authority in Jung-gu, Busan.

The vessel, weighing 1,731 tons, measures 56 meters in length and 16 meters in width, and it can accommodate up to 30 crew members. It is equipped with advanced marine survey equipment, including the 3000m-rated Multi-Beam Echo Sounder (MBES) EM 712 from Norway’s Kongsberg and the 5000m-rated Parametric Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) Deep 36 from Germany’s Innomar.

The GeoView DP-1 will begin its first mission next month, participating in a three-month project for Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), a Danish offshore wind development company, off the coast of Ulsan in the “Haeuli Floating Wind Farm” project.

GeoView highlighted that apart from research institutions like the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), this is the first time a private company in South Korea has secured a large vessel for marine exploration.

Founded in 2005 as a marine exploration specialist, GeoView has previously completed notable projects, including the installation of an underwater power cable between Wando and Jeju in 2021 and marine exploration for Equinor, a Norwegian state-owned company, for the “Firefly Floating Wind Farm” project off the coast of Ulsan last year.

GeoView’s Director, Heo Do-yong, stated, “With over ten representatives from domestic offshore wind development companies attending the launch ceremony, we will continue to work towards leading the marine exploration market in Korea.”
