Geoview announced on the 26th that it held a launch ceremony for its marine exploration vessel, ‘Geoview DP-1,’ at Pier 1 in Busan Port on the 25th. Currently, only some research institutions, such as the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, own specialized marine exploration vessels. This marks the first time a private company in Korea has launched a large vessel for marine exploration.
The Geoview DP-1 will be used for preliminary investigations required for offshore wind farm development. To develop offshore wind power, companies must thoroughly understand the seabed topography and other information about the construction area. Marine exploration is essential in this process. Given Korea’s strong winds, offshore wind power, which causes minimal ecological damage and allows for large-scale projects, is expected to have promising prospects.
It is also noteworthy that a domestic company is conducting its own marine exploration. Kim Hyun-do, CEO of Geoview, stated, “With this launch ceremony, Geoview has acquired a large marine exploration vessel and can now stand shoulder to shoulder with global marine exploration companies.”
