“Domestic companies should not limit themselves to geophysical surveys but expand to include geotechnical surveys for offshore wind power. If we do not prepare, experienced and large-scale foreign firms will take control of the information in our seas. GeoView’s investment in our seas is significant as it safeguards our national security and maritime sovereignty.”
Kim Hyun-do, the CEO of GeoView, explained the significance of the GeoTechnical vessel ‘Gista’ departure. Currently, domestic companies are largely limited to geophysical surveys, making geotechnical surveys reliant on the assistance of foreign firms. Kim believes it is essential for domestic firms to invest actively in ship and equipment localization.
GeoView, founded in 2005, was primarily a marine survey company focused on geophysical exploration. However, in recent years, the company has expanded its capabilities to meet the growing offshore wind and subsea cable markets.
“Safety is paramount in marine operations. Recently, a development tender lacked standards for professional equipment and safety. However, these standards must change, and new criteria for professional personnel and equipment must be established. GeoView will lead these changes, aiming to see the domestic offshore wind market develop with a focus on safety and efficiency.”
South Korea has lacked proper research and development and safety standards in marine exploration due to the absence of oil and gas resources. As a result, the country’s capabilities in marine operations are less advanced than those of developing nations, and this gap becomes more apparent as the offshore wind market grows. Kim aims to lead the establishment of standards as a domestic company.
“I believe that only when a proper system is in place can accurate results be obtained. Marine ground surveys are not a task that can be completed quickly and haphazardly; once started, they require a long-term effort. A well-structured system must be in place for both worker safety and efficiency.”
Kim’s strategy involves using Gista to localize the geotechnical market and achieve technological independence through continued investment. This approach aims to support offshore wind developers by enabling safe and efficient project development.
“It is a proud moment to take the first step towards geotechnical localization with Gista and to have built a system we can be proud of. This represents a new path for GeoView, and I look forward with hope and optimism. We will strive to continue investing so we can provide excellent services to offshore wind developers.”
